The book of 1 Samuel begins with Hannah, a woman deeply burdened by barrenness. In her anguish, she pours out her heart to God, vowing that if He grants her a son, she will dedicate him to the Lord’s service. God answers her prayer, and she gives birth to Samuel. True to her vow, she presents him at the tabernacle to be raised in service to God. This chapter highlights the power of persistent prayer and God’s faithfulness to those who seek Him. Hannah’s story reminds us that God hears the cries of His people and answers in His perfect timing.
Hannah’s prayer of praise acknowledges God's sovereignty and justice. Meanwhile, the chapter introduces Eli’s corrupt sons, Hophni and Phinehas, who dishonor God by abusing their priestly positions. Despite their wickedness, young Samuel serves the Lord faithfully. God pronounces judgment on Eli’s household for failing to restrain his sons. This chapter contrasts faithfulness with corruption, reminding us that God honors those who fear Him but brings justice upon those who rebel against Him. The Lord sees all, and He raises up those who are devoted to Him while bringing down the proud.
God calls Samuel in the night, but at first, the boy does not recognize His voice. With Eli’s guidance, Samuel responds, "Speak, for thy servant heareth." The Lord reveals to Samuel the impending judgment on Eli’s household due to their unfaithfulness. Samuel becomes established as a prophet because he listens to and obeys God's word. This chapter teaches us the importance of being attentive to God’s voice and responding with a willing heart. Just as Samuel grew in God’s presence, we are called to listen, obey, and walk faithfully in His truth.
The first three chapters of 1 Samuel teach us about God's faithfulness, justice, and calling. Hannah’s story reminds us to trust God in our deepest struggles. The corruption of Eli’s sons warns us of the dangers of disregarding God’s holiness. Samuel’s calling encourages us to listen for God’s voice and respond with obedience. Throughout these chapters, we see that God is sovereign, hears our prayers, and calls those who will serve Him faithfully.
