In Numbers 22, Balak, the king of Moab, fears Israel and hires Balaam, a diviner, to curse them. Though God initially forbids Balaam to go, Balaam insists, and God allows him but warns him to speak only what He commands. On the journey, Balaam’s donkey sees the angel of the Lord blocking the path and refuses to move, leading to a miraculous event where the donkey speaks. This chapter reminds us that God is sovereign and will use even unexpected means to direct our paths. It also warns us against pursuing personal gain over God’s will.
Balaam attempts to curse Israel but instead blesses them because he can only speak what God commands. He proclaims that God's promises are unchangeable and that Israel is set apart for His purposes. This chapter highlights God's faithfulness—what He has blessed, no one can curse. It reminds us that when we belong to God, no enemy or force can overturn His divine purpose for our lives. His word stands firm, and His promises are sure.
In Balaam’s final oracle, he not only blesses Israel but also prophesies of a future King who will rise from Jacob. This prophecy ultimately points to Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who will rule with righteousness and justice. Despite Balak’s efforts to manipulate Balaam into cursing Israel, God uses the situation to affirm His plan of redemption. This chapter reassures us that God’s plans will always prevail, and He is working toward the fulfillment of His kingdom.
Numbers 22-24 teach us that no scheme of man can overturn God’s will. Balaam sought to profit from prophecy, but God used him to declare blessings instead of curses. These chapters remind us that God is in control, His promises are unchanging, and His redemptive plan is unfolding according to His perfect timing. Even in opposition, God’s purposes prevail, and He faithfully works out His plan for His people.
